VALUE OF TRADITION
Written by Sanjay Rath
Wednesday, 06 January 2010 18:19
Let me indulge ...

A simple explanation for such a complex issue is not possible nor would it be wise to say 'to each his own'. Ignorance is surely not bliss in spiritual matters. You have given some nice examples to bring out the point that it aybe impossible to infer the level of the worship but then that is what tradition is all about. It gives us the possibility of lerning the scriptures and understanding them in their higher levels. when the understanding arises and as we grow older and pass through the stages where desire for small things no longer satisfies. Then the same little boy whowould go to the shiva linga for asking for good marks in exam will gow up and feel ashamed that he could ever ask for such a petty thing like better exam scores. But then his mind tells him, look Shiva is holy father of all, he understands. you were small. now pray for higher things

then he goes a level higher and asks for well being of his family...and like this another 25 years or so passes and he becomes wiser by the day and desires change. Kids have grown and he goes to Shiva linga and realises he was so stupid to ask for the well being of the children - they are not really his, they are Shiva's cildren and he is only a guardian. now he must rise higher and ask for well being of his country, his people, his dharma...and all that. He lives beyond 75 and then he ralises that the nation is only a line drawn on a piece of paper called map. there is a whole world in animals and plansts who have shared life with him. The pipal tree in his courtyard is the only living thing that has stayed with him. wife is dead, siblings are dead or too weak to see him. children have their lives to live and now grandchildren also have their children to marry and settle. He has done his time and then he goes to the Shiva linga and wonders - I must be the most stupid fellow on earth. I have wasted a whole life asking for something which in fact is Lord Shiva's responsibility. He is the old father of all and he has been doing his dharma all through. So why was I being so narrow and selfish and asking only for my wife and children and nation. what about othr nations? What about the good old pipal tree under which I sit everyday who has been my only true companion for 75 years. Let me now pray for all in the world, the globe and my pipal tree ...

And that night he sees Lord Shiva in a dream telling him that he has lived a good life and is now grow a little older.

If a day of the devas = 1 year in human life, then then his deva age is just 75 days (although he feels like 75 years in human life). In deva calendar he is just beginning to take some baby steps....

If after this people still have the time to do all those things for personal gratification, then they are just babies in the eyes of Shiva. and babies can always seek forgiveness when they grow out of their baby mistakes and fancies.

Now think of tradition. If the present day traditions started at the time of Sri Krishna, then they are about 3000 days old (in eyes of devas, not shiva or brahma or vishnu)...in simple words, the traditions restarte at the time of the Kali Yuga by the grace of Krishna are just 9 years old (3000/360 approx). Which means it is time for them to have sacred thread. therefore all these traditions are seeing a sudden spurt of religious study, inquiry and all that. But in comparision to the scriptres themselves, they are small kids for the scriptures are as old as Brahma. that is why they are Brahma vidya.

2012 AND BEYOND: A NEW SPECIES OF HUMANITY

2012 and Beyond: A New Species of Humanity

by Stephen Knapp

When it comes to the consideration of the year 2012, and the special date of December 21, it all evolves around the Mayan calendar. People everywhere are focused on this date to some degree or another. Some people feel we are going to enter a new age, a new awareness, or maybe the earth as we know it will come to an end.

However, in February of 2006 at a conference in Jaipur, India, called “Spirituality Beyond Religion” in which participants from over 30 of the world’s older indigenous cultures gathered to share, learn, study, and pray together. That is where I met Vocatelo Tyu, a Mayan elder from Guatamala who had a few things to tell all of us about the prophecies connected with the Mayan calendar and the year 2012.

First he explained that the ending of the Mayan calendar in 2012 is no different than if someone simply did not make a new calendar after the date of December 31 of any given year. It does not mean that the world is going to end, as some people seem to propose, but that it was merely the end of that cycle, which was not continued in another calendar. He explained that the world would go on, and not to worry. However, he was a little upset that when the Western researchers found the calendar, they did not confer with the Mayan elders at the time. Because of that, there was a time discrepancy between the Mayan calendar and the western time calculations. This meant that the date of December 21, 2012 may not be accurate, and may be off by several years. This means that the ending of the Mayan cycle could very well be in some other year, possibly 2015 or even 2020. But now the focus is on the year 2012.

He specifically explained that even though some people are depending on the idea that the world may end in 2012, he hoped that people would not be too upset if the year 2012 passes and nothing happens.

After I heard what he had to say, I thought it was quite profound to understand this directly from a Mayan elder. Therefore, the world will go on and we need to continue with our plans and development, especially our spiritual development. And for those who are putting so much emphasis on 2012 as the time for a grand awakening or the entrance into some new cycle, we still must decide where we go from here? Naturally, if everyone is intent on the meaning and purpose of 2012, it can certainly help the planetary awakening if people try to increase their awareness, and their focus on cultural or spiritual unity. Thus, in some ways, such intent can create a type of self-fulfilling prophecy, or at least an upliftment of social harmony and cooperation. There can be nothing bad about that. And if this is what we get out of 2012, this would certainly be a positive benefit. But what happens beyond that?

The fact is, whether we give credit to anything connected with 2012 or not, it is still up to humanity to bring about a new era, or what could be called a new species of humanity. This new species will not be based on physical changes but on the development of a new spiritual consciousness, and the goal of working toward the perfection of human life both materially and spiritually. This new species of humanity are those who are not afraid to investigate higher dimensions of reality, new areas of spiritual experiences that are beyond the limitations of conventional and fear-based religions [those that urge the obedience to their principles based on the wrath of God]. This awakening is happening now and growing all the time. However, this has always been the Vedic process for thousands of years.

So, in some ways, the new species is but a reawakening of the spiritual consciousness that was prominent in the early ages such as in Satya-yuga, or what is still found in the enlightened sages of today. Yet, this consciousness, when compared with the general materialistic views and motivations found in most people today, is like a new species of humanity. It is the rare type of person who is genuinely concerned about the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of all living entities, and who also has the higher consciousness to perceive how to do that. Everyone who is concerned about themselves and the welfare of the planet should be eager to be a part of this new species of humanity, this higher consciousness, and help in this process of spiritual change and improvement. For any real solutions to our problems or social issues must be based on a spiritual foundation.

With the right consciousness we can, indeed, make proper use of things to live comfortably without enmity between each other and nature. And if a new species of such like-minded people act together in this way, it will have extremely powerful effects on this planet. If, however, humankind insists on seeing each other on the basis of bodily and cultural differences, then their vision is no better than that of those cats and dogs who howl, bark, chase, and fight with one another. What’s the difference? There is no excuse for humankind to remain on such a base level when they have the higher mental and intellectual faculties that they do, as long as they use them. They must rise above the animalistic platform by their spiritual progress. Only through this means will humankind reach a level of evolutionary development in which they can begin to see beyond bodily and cultural distinctions and work together in spiritual harmony with themselves, nature, and the Supreme Will.

It is obvious to many that the forces of darkness are getting stronger as the years go by, as the Age of Kali advances. Moral standards decrease while crime increases. Similarly, the forces of light are also getting stronger, and new levels of spiritual knowledge are coming into this earthly plane, the likes of which we have not understood for thousands of years. The characteristics between the forces of light and darkness are also becoming more distinct. Therefore, the people of this earth will participate in this polarization and will be required to decide with which force they will participate: The spiritual and progressive level, or the descending and materialistic one.

As this polarization increases, the future of the world becomes twofold: One aspect will be the obvious physical, climatic, geographic, and economic changes. The other will be the more spiritual changes. The physical, social, and geographic changes will not be viewed or experienced as so drastic by those who flow into the higher dimension, while planet earth will display a more difficult life for those who remain absorbed in the lower materialistic and fearful level of consciousness. The earth will accommodate both levels of dimension, but the views of existence on earth will be very different from each level. But which level we choose to enter depends on us.

There will, indeed, be a higher and progressive energy shift, as predicted by the Vedic scripture, and other traditions, and it is already in progress. Remember, consciousness is not merely a state of mind but also a vibrational level. The higher the consciousness, the higher the frequency or vibratory level of energy in which that person perceives, understands, lives, and sends out to others. This is the opportunity that this Golden Age within Kali-yuga provides for us, to whatever degree we develop it. Adjusting the level of our consciousness is also the way we can change the course of our future.

We can decide for ourselves what level of consciousness we want to develop and in which we want to exist. The higher the social consciousness is, the less severe the changes will be in society and throughout the planet, and the more harmonious things will be globally. In other words, there would be less need of severe earth changes for the cleansing of the planet. Remember, the world only reflects the mass consciousness of the inhabitants. When the inhabitants work in harmony with nature, what is the need for nature to cause repercussions to our actions? When nature and people are balanced, the world will give what we need. Thus, we can create a very bright and positive future for ourselves and this world simply by elevating our consciousness. What are we waiting for?

What this means is that we are at a decisive point. There will be a transformed world. It can be attained by force through what may seem like apocalyptic changes, or through cooperation by a planetary awakening. Whether the whole population awakens is not necessary. Only a certain percentage need be enlightened in this way because the power of light will far exceed and overpower the force of darkness or materialism, at least enough to keep the positive changes available for those who wish to participate in them. Again, which way we choose to go is up to us. No prophecy or prediction is written in stone. Whatever change comes is because of the change of consciousness in the general masses. So, let us develop our spiritual consciousness and not waste this opportunity.

VEDODAY2050 - DECEMBER 2009
Written by Sanjay Rath

Vedoday2050

Volume I, Number 11, December 2009

A key Vedic teaching is that we should view God as our mother. The most important relation that a child has is that with the mother; analogously God is the cosmic mother Savita who gives birth to the entire universe. Although every relationship is a two-way one, a mother is exceptional in that she gives everything to her child without expecting anything in return. Similarly, God benevolently makes available all that we need for our overall good such as food, water and air. Our vital body systems function due to Her so that even when we are deep in sleep this continues to be the case. Although our relationship with Her also seems to be a one-way affair (because we cannot visualize what we can give to Her) there are, in fact, some responsibilities incumbent upon us humans in order to be good children.

Every relationship needs to be nurtured at three levels: knowledge, action and togetherness. The corresponding Sanskrit words are jnana, karma and upasana. a) Jnana – Just as we must know our loved ones well, we must also know our duties and responsibilities towards God. b) Karma – Our actions ought to fulfil these duties and responsibilities. c) Upasana - We must, exclusively and devotedly, spend time with God. We must be faithful in all three facets of our relationship with God.

Prasthanatrayi – Jnana, Karma and Upasana

As a whole the triad of jnana, karma and upasana is called prasthanatrayi (three-fold journey) in Sanskrit; in India the vehicle traditionally utilised for this journey is Sandhya (also, called Sandhya-Vandanam or Sandhyo-Pasana). As explained by Maharsi Dayananda Sarasvati (1824-’83), the books of the Vedas correspond neatly to these three dimensions of jnana, karma and upasana.

1. a) Rigveda mainly details vi-jnana (the spiritual sciences, shedding light on the nature of both God and the soul) b) Atharvaveda covers jnana (wordly knowledge such as the material sciences; family, community and political affairs)
2. Yajurveda deals with karma
3. Samaveda covers upasana

Jnana: We must know and understand the true nature of self and God. I, the individual, am a tiny spirit within the body structure for which the Sanskrit word is atma. Likewise, the entire universe is inhabited by an infinite cosmic spirit, called God – for whom there are many Sanskrit names e.g. Atma, Paramatma, Isvara, Paramesvara, Brahma, etc. But, His own name is Om, the most natural sound that exists in the universe. Furthermore, we must understand the relationship between our soul and God. The Vedas teach us that a proper understanding of anything cannot be complete without an increased awareness, appreciation and affinity towards the creator. An enlightened person always seeks to know the artist from the art. Similarly, differentiating the creator from the creation enables us to learn the differences between matter and the spirit. Both material sciences and spiritual sciences must be studied together – avidya and vidya (or apara vidya and para vidya). Knowledge cannot only be derived from books and teachers but must also be acquired by personal experience, such as self-realization and God-realization – atma-saksatkar and isvara-saksatkara. The importance of gaining experiential knowledge is illustrated by the meaning of the Sanskrit word for philosophy darsana – seeing is believing!

Karma: Knowledge must be used to guide karma. The objective of improving the quality of our knowledge is to apply it to improving the quality of our actions and behaviour. An average human being performs karma to obtain its fruits – the end results. Crucially however, the best human beings perform excellent karma as a matter of nature or habit without consciously having any vested interest in making any type of personal gain. niskama is one word used to describe such karma – disinterested action. The word yajna is more commonly used in the Vedas to describe this concept of acting in a giving way without having the remotest motive of desiring any gain in return.

Upasana: Thus, it is inevitable that such a person will succeed in the third dimension of life, namely, upasana – to be with God. How to best attain this is explained par excellence by Patanjali, the author of Yoga-Sutra; it is the ultimate objective of human life.

Although we must make step-by-step progress in all three of these directions on a day-to-day basis, the relative balance varies at different stages of human life. So, student life is dominated by knowledge, the married householder’s life is dominated by karma and retirement should be dominated by upasana. Nevertheless, it must be re-emphasised that the Vedas teach us that we must perform the other two components daily in addition to the dominant one.

The Vedas Say:

Ya im cakara na so asya veda ya im dadarsa hiruginnu tasmat

Sa maturyona parivito antarbahupraja nirrtima vivesa. Rgveda 1.164.32

Its meaning: One who is action-oriented, but who does not care to know his true self, is destined to go through the wombs of many mothers by the One who sees every event and delivers justice.

Purport: Those who are engaged in karma alone and do not balance their life with true knowledge and communion with God (jnana and upasana) must take birth again and again.

Where Do We Go Wrong?: Not only is modern-day education heavily biased towards material sciences but its objective nowadays is also to maximize one’s personal income. Few people these days seem to have a true love of knowledge. Thus, knowledge is a means and not an end. This is contrary to the Vedic objective – jnanan-mukti (described classically in the Samkhya-Darsana by Kapila) – that true knowledge is experientially learning to contemplate both God and the soul in order to eventually gain liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Most people these days focus on devoting their life towards karma, in particular the acquisition of material wealth, to the exclusion of gaining true spiritual knowledge and upasana through the prescribed method of Astanga Yoga. In conclusion, people must devote some time everyday to study the Vedas and perform Vedic Sandhya as a meditative experience; neglecting to do so will perpetuate the sense of a lack of fulfilment.
